MPs launch inquiry into new models of children's social work and their impact

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Social Work has launched an inquiry into new models of children’s social work and is inviting interested groups and individuals to submit written evidence.

The parliamentary group, co-chaired by Conservative MP David Simmonds and Labour MP Barbara Keeley, will consider the current models being used by local authorities and organisations and the impact these have on outcomes for children.

The inquiry will also examine any opportunities for, and obstacles to, adopting new models, as well as the role of the public and private sector in these models.

There will be three oral evidence sessions taking place in July and September 2021.

The evidence collected through this inquiry will contribute towards the formation of a report by the APPG which will be shared with the Department for Education.

Despite social work being a devolved issue, the inquiry is welcoming responses from individuals and groups across all nations of the UK to inform learning on best practice.

David Simmonds MP, Co-Chair of the APPG for Social Work said children’s social care is at the forefront of the Government’s political agenda, as evidenced by the ongoing review chaired by Josh MacAlister.

“This means that now is the best opportunity for the APPG for Social Work to be able to influence this work and any future legislation that may come to Parliament by conducting our own inquiry into children’s social work models.

“We are looking to hear from experts across the sector, from social workers to providers, to help inform our inquiry into what works best for children in our care.”

All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are informal cross-party groups within Parliament, meeting to discuss issues of concern and explore issues relating to their specialist area.
