The post-holder will join our large established Occupational Therapy team which has 33 occupational therapists and support workers working across the hospital. Main duties of the job
The Rare Bone Service has been established to support patients aged 0-18, who present with metabolic bone disorders, this will primarily be in Achondroplasia and Skeletal Dysplasia although children with other bone conditions such as inherited rickets, osteopetrosis and fibrous dysplasia may also be referred. The post holder will take the lead role for occupational therapy in this new service which has a strong multidisciplinary focus and includes physiotherapy, psychology, nursing and medical colleagues. There is close working with the occupational therapists from GOSH’s orthopaedic, spinal and osteogenesis Imperfecta service, as well as our community colleagues.
Key areas include:
• First point of contact for newly diagnosed babies and children.
• Outreach visits to neonatal units / hospitals to support families on daily management and advise local teams.
• Advising on development, activities of daily living play and mobility and in the context of a life-long condition.
• Advice at times of change e.g.: entry to nursery or episodes of surgery.
• Supporting local therapy colleagues to meet the ongoing therapy needs of our clients particularly those who are more severely affected and require ongoing support.
• Participating in innovation and research activities pertinent to occupational therapy in rare bone disorders

Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
Extensive post-graduate experience in paediatric occupational therapy
Previous experience working with children and young people with physical disabilities and co-occurring neurodevelopmental conditions.
Previous experience working with children with developmental conditions, including using standardised assessments and providing therapy to address occupational performance.
Extensive knowledge of neuroanatomy, typical motor development and atypical movement patterns associated with disease, illness, or trauma.
Expert knowledge of child development and the impact of physical disabilities on everyday activities.
To be able to contribute towards the diagnostic process for children with a possible/proven rare bone disorder diagnosis and to develop appropriate treatment /intervention plans
Knowledge and established expertise in prescription of wheelchairs and equipment for activities of daily living
Expert knowledge of the current evidence-base for paediatric occupational therapy interventions
Experience supporting knowledge translation in a clinical setting
Knowledge and understanding of the wider NHS system and structure that may influence clinical service provision.
Desirable criteria
Experience designing and developing educational content for courses delivered to develop clinicians’ knowledge
