Job summary

We are looking for an experienced mental health nurse, social worker or occupational therapist to join our perinatal community mental health service. The Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service (SPMHS) is a multi-disciplinary community mental health service for pregnant and postnatal women and birthing people with mental illness. The aim of the team is to detect, prevent and treat perinatal mental health problems to improve the experiences of pregnancy and the two years postpartum for service users and their families. In their role the postholder will also need to hold in mind the parent-infant relationship and how it can be impacted by mental ill-health and consider the experiences of the mother/birthing parent, child and partner when developing care plans.

Staff work closely with the five maternity sites in North Central London. Clinics run at maternity sites, children's centres and community centres across the boroughs as well as home visits.

The model consists of an Administrative Hub and operates with 3 clinical sub-teams;

-East team (Enfield & Haringey)

-South team (Camden & Islington)

-West team (Barnet)

This role is based in the Barnet team. The postholder will work in N12 9RH.

SPMHS also runs a separate service called Maple which supports women and birthing people who've experienced perinatal loss and birth trauma. Colleagues in the community perinatal mental health team and Maple work closely together but the services are distinct from each other.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be supported and supervised by the band 7 senior perinatal clinicians in the Perinatal Service to carry out a high number of comprehensive new patient assessments and manage a caseload of patients in line with the requirements of the service operational policy and service strategy. The postholder will work to provide safe, evidence based, effective, culturally competent care is delivered in a timely manner to service users.

In carrying out this role the postholder will make best use of the resources available to them; ensuring that at all times best use is made of health and social care resources to assist recovery and re-enablement.

The post holder will support governance and audit within the team, ensuring that service delivery focuses on the quality agenda and that dignity, privacy and respect is afforded at all times to service users.

This job description is written as an indication of the nature and scope of duties and responsibilities. Additional competencies may be required. It is not intended as a fully descriptive list and does not include specific skills or therapeutic interventions that may be required of the specialist service area. The job holder will be expected to carry out other duties assigned by the Operational Service Manager, which are appropriate to the grade.
