Job summary

The Liaison Psychiatry Service are offering an exciting opportunity for either a Band 6 or Band 5-6 Developmental Liaison Psychiatry Practitioner to join our team based at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) hospital sites based between Burton on Trent, Lichfield and Tamworth and travel between sites will be expected.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with aspirations to progress and is either ready to take the next step or who is almost ready for the next step in their career. If appointed a Band 5-6 you will be supported to achieve a core set of competencies over a 6-12 month period. Upon successful completion you will progress to a Band 6.

You will provide Mental Health provisions for all-age mental health presentations. It is an exciting time to join our team as we have recently been commissioned to move to a 24/7 365 Service and offers a unique opportunity for someone who holds a professional background in either Nursing (RMN, RN or LD Nurse), Occupational Therapy, or Social Work and who are interested in helping to create a responsive and holistic mental health service. You must be fully qualified in the appropriate profession and registered with the relevant professional body.

Shifts will cover 24/7, on a shift rota. As part of our commitment to flexible working, we will consider requests for flexible working which can be discussed at interview

Main duties of the job

You will provide high-quality mental health assessment, risk assessment and treatment, for patients presenting with a mental health issue within a physical healthcare setting.

As part of this role, you will be expected to:

Provide indirect patient care via formal and informal consultancy supporting informal and formal training for the acute Trust staff in relation to mental health and wellbeing.

Provide specialist assessment and care planning in conjunction with service users and carers, evaluation of individual treatment plans and discharge planning.

Facilitating the timely and safe discharge of patients from the hospital, and enabling hospital staff to manage risks related to mental health in the acute environment.

Provide formulations based on patient's individual care needs; develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care. Effectively communicate these plans and any changes to the person, their family/carer and clinical colleagues active in their care.

Undertake skilled and robust risk assessments. Deliver and promote positive risk taking, where appropriate, to improve quality of life and maximise occupational performance/independence.

Deliver a range of interventions in accordance with the agreed plan of care and Pathway guidance.

Please note: You will be required to achieve the expected competencies within 6-12 months.This means that you must meet certain skill, knowledge, or performance standards (competencies) within a time frame of 6 to 12 months from starting the role. We do not have Band 5 roles within this service; therefore, you may be redeployed to an alternative service if the core competencies are not met within the agreed time frame.

The role requires you to travel over a large geographical area so access to suitable transport is required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
-A qualified and registered mental health practitioner (degree or equivalent, minimum diploma level) ie nurse, OT, social worker
-Evidence of short courses/professional training relevant to the post

Desirable
-Training or relevant experience in managing suicide risk and risk management
-Training or a sound awareness of common physical health conditions and their relationship with mental illness and wellbeing.
-Professional education or qualification in psychological therapies, particularly CBT or solution-focused brief interventions.

Experience

Essential
-Extensive post registration experience working in a variety of mental health settings, including working with patients in distress.
-Experience of working therapeutically in a variety of settings, including Crisis and/or Liaison services

Desirable
-Experience of providing Liaison Psychiatry services previously.
-Experience of working with any or all of the following; Older Adults with organic and/or functional mental health difficulties, Adults of working age, Children and Young People, Alcohol and Substance use clients & Perinatal mental health

Skills and Knowledge

Essential
-Skills in assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating mental health care/treatment interventions
-Skills in psychological interventions and suicide risk assessment and management
-Have excellent communication skills, including engagement of fellow professionals, carers, people in distress or those in stages of acute illness
-Sound working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and the overlaps, and the ability to apply this in practice.

Desirable
-Excellent knowledge and awareness of the overall function of Liaison Psychiatry services and where they fit into the NHS system.
-Experience of working effectively with a range of statutory, non-statutory agencies
