Using Theory in Practice

The idea of ‘applying theory to practice’ is one that students have been taught for generations. However, it has been argued that this places the cart before the horse and that we should be beginning with practice, not theory. This webinar highlights the problems associated with applying theory to practice and proposes instead a ‘theorising practice’ approach. The key role of theory as part of our professional knowledge base is affirmed but the conventional way of thinking about the relationship between theory and practice is questioned.

Neil Thompson has been writing, teaching and training about theory and practice for many years and has helped generations of students, practitioners and managers to make sense of the relationship between the two.
