Women’s Aid has launched a dedicated service for professionals currently working with survivors of domestic abuse, who are seeking refuge accommodation and support.
Launched on International Women’s Day (Monday 8 March), the dedicated service is available to professionals including social workers, health workers, housing officers and the police.
By using the new service, professionals can now use the charity’s direct services team to assist with the search for information by accessing a database of violence against women and girls (VAWG) services across the UK.
Women’s Aid’s Direct Services team can search for the latest information on vacancies in refuges, and availability of other Violence Against Women and Girls’ services including outreach, drop-ins, counselling services and advocacy projects.
Dr Lisa Johnson MBE, manager of Women’s Aid Direct Services, said she was proud to launch the new online digital platform.
“The need for up-to-date information, including refuge vacancies, is more crucial now than ever.
“Through the pandemic we have seen a rise of users for our Live Chat and other direct services. We will be supporting professionals by providing information to enable them to better support survivors.
“This way, we can all work together for the benefit of women and children fleeing abuse and rebuilding their lives.”
The charity says it aims to respond to requests the same working day during the opening hours of Monday to Friday 10-2pm.
A survivor, speaking on behalf of Women’s Aid, said when she approached her local authority for help she had a new-born baby in her arms.
“It is so stressful fleeing abuse and facing homelessness, and so anything that makes the process smoother for all concerned is really welcome.”
